• About Timisoara

    Situated at the cross of some of the most important commercial routes linking the WEST and the EAST, Timisoara, the capital of the Timis district, is an important historical, economic, financial, cultural and scientific centre, with a numerous community of foreign citizens: Germans, Italians, Hungarians, Serbians.

    Due to its many parks, public gardens, squares and green spaces, Timisoara has earned its name of garden-city. The cultural scene enjoys also a good representation: 3 important theaters – Romanian, German and Hungarian, The Romanian Opera and the Philharmonic Orchestra and many other art galleries, museums and exhibition centres.

    The population of Timisoara is of approximately 400.000 people, mostly of Romanian nationality.
    The first documentary mention of Timisoara dates from 1266, when it appeared with the name: Castrus Timisiensis. On the maps it is mentioned in 1339. It must be said about Timisoara, that it was the first European town to enjoy street lighting with electricity (12 November 1884).

    How to reach Timisoara, from the airport to the city
    Taxis – available outside the arrival gate;
    Public transportation – Express no.4 (E4) connects the Airport  to Timişoara city center.
    The traveling time is approximately 20 minutes.

We recommend to arrange your hotel booking as early as possible. The role of the Tourist Infocentre (served by qualified personnel ) is to offer useful information about the city to the visitors: accommodation, transport, monuments and touristic attractions, cultural events (concerts, festivals, theater plays, opera, fairs, exhibitions, etc), city tours and short trips in the surrounding areas, leisure activities, offers of the local tourism operators, booking of train or airplane tickets, etc. Tourists, Romanian or foreigners, can find at the Tourist Infocentre promotion materials for Timisoara and for the Banat region and in the future they will also find materials about Romania and about Timisoara’s twin cities. Various events take place at the Tourist Infocentre Timisoara: varnishing days, book launches, photo and painting exhibitions, round tables and discussions, films and slides on touristic themes.
